You’ll work alongside and support the WCH Mental Health Programme Clinical Lead, who is leading the broader system transformation across the region.

About Us

West Coast Health is a community-led, non-governmental organisation committed to improving health outcomes for the people of Te Tai o Poutini. We work in close partnership with iwi, kaupapa Māori providers, general practices, NGOs, and Te Whatu Ora to ensure whānau have access to comprehensive, integrated, and equitable care.

The Role – Aronga

As our Primary Mental Health Service Manager, you will be at the forefront of a major recovery-model transformation, guiding primary mental health service delivery across the region.

You’ll lead a team of Youth Counsellors, Health Improvement Practitioners (HIPs), and Brief Intervention Practitioners ensuring their practice is grounded in evidence, recovery principles, cultural safety, and the needs of our rural communities.

This role is central to the implementation and ongoing success of the West Coast’s new Mental Health and Addiction System Model of Care. Your leadership will contribute to the realisation of a system where access is seamless, care is whānau-centred, and support is stepped, integrated, and locally led.

What You'll Do

Lead and embed a recovery-oriented Model of Care across primary mental health services

  • Partner with kaupapa Māori and community providers to improve equity and access

  • Promote seamless integration between primary care, community, and secondary services

  • Support your team to deliver high-quality, culturally responsive, evidence-based care

  • Champion innovation in rural mental health, aligned with national strategy and Te Tiriti o Waitangi

What You Bring

  • Registered health professional qualification relevant to mental health and holding a current APC (e.g., Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Social Worker).

  • Significant experience in mental health service delivery within primary or community care settings.

  • Strong understanding of Te Tiriti, cultural safety, and health equity

  • A systems-thinker with a passion for transformation and service design

  • Ability to inspire and support diverse clinical teams in a rural context

  • Proven track record of collaborative leadership and change implementation

Why This Role Matters

The West Coast is undergoing a once-in-a-generation change in how mental health care is delivered. This role offers the chance to shape that future in the primary care sector putting recovery, whānau, and community at the centre. If you want to lead meaningful, lasting change in a region that values relationships, innovation, and connection to place, this is the role for you.
