Suicide Prevention and Postvention Coordinator 

$85,000 per annum (1 FTE)

West Coast Health as the Primary Health Organisation for Te Tai o Poutini West Coast is a non-government organisation (NGO) that exists to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of this region. As a community trust we are governed by a Board of Trustees with representation from the health workforce, Māori health providers, iwi, and the local community

West Coast Health’s Community Wellbeing Services provide holistic, community-focused healthcare tailored to the unique needs of the West Coast region. With a strong emphasis on whānau-centred care, equity, and local collaboration, their services support mental, physical, and social wellbeing. By working alongside individuals and communities, they strive to ensure accessible, innovative, and sustainable healthcare that empowers people to thrive.

We are seeking a Suicide Prevention and Postvention Coordinator based on the West Coast to take responsibility for leading, coordinating and facilitating a range of suicide prevention and postvention activities within our district. Building relationships, collaborating and networking within our community are a key focus in this people-centric role. A little more about the role:

  • Design and deliver a suicide prevention and postvention action plan with key stakeholders while maintaining awareness of and attending to emerging issues.  Partnering with Hauora Maori partners to support their Suicide prevention activities will be a priority of the strategy.
  • Support the implementation of the West Coast Suicide Prevention Action Plan as part of the NZ Suicide Prevention Strategy.
  • Continue to develop and grow positive relationships with the community, Iwi, Māori health providers and other critical external parties.
  • Carry out suicide prevention activities to reach all communities particularly those who are vulnerable or at greater risk 
  • Coordinate suicide postvention responses, aiming to reduce the effect and impact on whānau, friends and the wider community.
  • Continue to provide on-going support, training and education across the primary health system on the West Coast.
  • We are flexible about full or part time.

A little more about you:

  • Knowledge of, and experience in applying, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in your work (or a commitment to learn and grow in this area)
  • You may be a registered health professional or have a recognised qualification in public health, mental health or other health related fields, or you may have lived experience or work experience in the health or social services sector 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of the health and social services sectors
  • Ability to engage with whānau, tangata whenua, iwi and external community agencies
  • Understanding and awareness of the   services that make up the community mental health and wellbeing system 
  • A true passion and desire to help others with empathy and compassion
