Youth Mental Health Peer Support Worker

Location:  Māwhera / Greymouth

Hours: Full Time - 40 per week

Contract: Permanent

$69,000 per year 

 

Reporting to: Primary Mental Health Service Lead

West Coast Health (WCH) is seeking a passionate Youth MH Support Worker to join our Youth Mental Health Programme supporting rangatahi aged 12–25.

This role is about turning wellbeing plans into action. Working alongside online counsellors, you will support rangatahi to build practical skills, overcome barriers, and make meaningful progress towards their goals.

About the Role

You will provide:

1:1 Activation Support

  • Help rangatahi implement personalised wellbeing plans

  • Provide encouragement, mentoring, and practical strategies

  • Monitor progress and maintain accurate documentation

  • Liaise closely with online counsellors to ensure continuity of care

Group Wellbeing Sessions

  • Facilitate small group programmes in schools and community settings

  • Deliver sessions on topics such as resilience, coping skills, social connection, and wellbeing

  • Create safe, inclusive, strengths-based environments

  • Encourage peer learning and participation

You will also build relationships with schools, primary care, NGOs, and community organisations to help connect rangatahi with the right supports.

About You

Essential:

  • Experience working with young people (12–25 years)

  • Level 4 Youth Work qualification (or equivalent experience)

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a blended online/team environment

  • Sound judgement and risk awareness

  • Eligible to work in NZ

  • Able to obtain clearance under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014

Desirable:

  • Passion for youth mental health and community wellbeing

  • Experience working with Māori and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi

  • Confidence using Microsoft Office
